What Is a Work Instruction?

Work instructions should clearly and unambiguously communicate a series of steps to complete a process.

At Lattice Technology, our goals (in regard to work instructions) are to:

  • Provide an easy-to-use authoring tool that automates as much of the process as possible
  • Facilitate simple maintenance of work instructions when engineering updates are made to the CAD model
  • Directly leverage models from engineering CAD systems, while maintaining their accuracy
  • Offer numerous FREE options for using or consuming work instructions, including mobile devices

With our implementation, a single work instruction may include 10, 20, 100 or more steps. Each step includes the appropriate 3D interactive part model with a description of the action required and may also include an animation.

Work instructions have a wide variety of uses, such as:

  • Assembly Instructions
  • Disassembly Instructions
  • Service Procedures
  • Training

How To Author a Work Instruction?

Work instructions are created using XVL Studio, which simplifies much of the process through automation.

For example, XVL Studio automatically predicts the part paths for both assembly and disassembly. Since XVL models are accurate, clash detections can be predicated. Therefore, when XVL Studio selects a part path, potential clashes are avoided. For proper viewing of the process step, XVL Studio will select an optimal camera position for the best display of the operation.

After these automated actions, the user can begin their documentation of the process step. The automated paths and camera positions can be edited.

How Are Work Instructions Viewed?

The instructions can be deployed in 2D for printing or for static 2D electronic documents. They may also be deployed for interactive access on desktops, laptops or mobile devices.

Interactive access has several advantages, such as:

  • Clarity and ease-of-use: Only the current step is presented, while direct access to all is available. Animations may also be included.
  • Interactive model viewing: For each step the model can be re-positioned for optimal viewing and understanding of the step, while all annotations remain visible.
  • Simplified maintenance: When engineering changes occur or procedures are revised, updates to work instructions previously deployed can be done faster.
